Wanderlust

And so it is 2012, and February at that! Time is flying by and we are determined not to let the grass grow under our feet. We spent 18 January days on a cruise from Miami home to California, through the Panama Canal. This was yet another "bucket list" dream, and we had an immensely good time. I am home now, content to settle into the Studio for some quilting. I have two BOMs from last year to finish up, and two for 2012 waiting to get started. Although, if this Spring-like weather continues, who knows what I will end up doing. I am constantly amazed at how busy this thing called retirement can be :)

America the Beautiful

I feel so fortunate to live on this beautiful continent and to have the time to explore its wonders. We set off a few weeks ago to visit family in Idaho and Colorado, and to look for Fall Color. Even though winter was already setting in at the higher elevations, we found lots and lots of golden beauty.

And so I break a five months' silence with this photo of my great kittie, Otis. She was born 20 years ago this spring, and except for a little stiffness in the joints, is plugging right along. As you can see, she is a great assistant in the quilting studio. I've been plugging along on my BOMs--I really like to "multitask," which is to say I have a short attention span. I get to play with lots of fabrics and watch as the quilts grow. The explosion of fabric scraps was a boon to my current "retreat" project-- a "simple" old log cabin. I think I may have purchased 4 or 5 fat quarters, but the rest of the fabric came from the stash. The blocks are quite small, 7/8" strips to make into 4" finished. It's taken me since March to get the 576 blocks required. Set in streak-of-lightning design, I think it will be a stunner when done. With all those seams, it will weigh a ton. No hand quilting here, for sure.

Out of the Comfort Zone

Again it has been a month since I have posted. I have, however, been quite busy with my quilting projects. And we spent 11 wonderful days in Costa Rica. Talk about being "across the county line!" Being from SoCal, the closest I get to wild animals is when I visit the zoo or a national park. But in Costa Rica I was not more than 10 feet from any of these critters. The iguana was lolling in a tree next to a little roadside restaurant at Muelle. The leaf bug was resting on the railing at our lodge in Arenal. I almost stepped on the cayman, who was eyeing us humans from a secluded spot at the Ecocentro Danaus. That cute coatimundi was begging for bananas on the lawn at Arenal Observatory Lodge (the locals consider them to be somewhat of a pest.) And the birds--we photographed toucans and all varieties of tanager. There were hummingbirds of every stripe. Alas, we missed the elusive Resplendant Quetzal. That sighting will have to wait for another trip. And did I mention the flowers? The blossoms and leaves of the cloud forest and rain forest are wonders to behold. Once you leave the city of San Jose, the countryside is beautiful and peaceful. And the Pacific Ocean beaches we visited could rival ours in Cali. We ran into local and expat surfers--and a few hippies who evidently don't know that the 60s are history:)

All in all, we had a great time. There are so many wonderful things to see in this world of ours. DH and I plan to travel often--until either our feet or our checkbook gives out. We are looking forward to taking our eldest daughter and her eldest daughter to London and Paris this summer. Hoping to instill some wanderlust in the 14-year-old.

I've been quilting for 20 or so years. I've completed about 100 quilts in that time. I've always done machine piecing and quilting--my early efforts were pretty amateur, for sure. At least when it came to the quilting. When I made the acquaintance of Diane, an accomplished long-arm quilter, I was in heaven. Many, many tops became quilts in that period. It was "so many patterns, so little time."

But now I have a stash that is embarrassing, and a house full of quilts that I love. I need something that will satisfy my need to "sew seams," my need for diversity, and something that will slow me down. I tried online groups, and mostly they have been satisfying, but not something I will continue much longer. This year I will work on 2 BOMs, along with limited personal projects. I'm doing the "Beloved Beauties" quilt from thequiltshow.com. I think it will be a "top out of sight" quilt, and the fabrics are just gorgeous. I will certainly get to practice and improve my applique techinque. The second is "Civil War Chronicles," which will be much less of a stretch, but will satisfy my constant craving to work with reproduction fabrics from that period.

Having a 4-year-old grandson staying with us means that I have to be very serious about Christmas. We are a secular family, but I've always loved the spirit of the season of giving. I got this really cute kit from Moda and had a great time sewing up the little envelopes, doing the embellishment and filling them up with treats and other goodies. I put it up right after Thanksgiving and Danny has been very intent on predicting what fun thing will appear. December 1st was a candy cane-flavored lollipop with tootsie roll-style chocolate in the center. Yesterday, he got a little slot car to race around on Grandma's hardwood floors. Haven't opened today's yet, but the prediction is that it's edible and sweet. An added bonus is that this is a great way to reinforce his counting skills.

And so I survived the circus that is Halloween. It is most definitely my LEAST favorite day, but with a 4-year-old grandson staying with us, I was trapped. I did my very best at decorating, making cookies, working on "the mummy costume" and trying to be a good sport----knowing that November, and Thanksgiving would be just around the corner.
Because Thanksgiving is my MOST favorite holiday, with its celebration of family and country. I have been blessed to be raised in a wonderful family, to have married into another wonderful family, and to have children who are caring human beings raising my beautiful grandchildren. And I was lucky enough to be born in a wonderful country, which fact I never forget.
Wanting to pick up a few decorations, I headed to the local Michael's. But it's already Christmas there. My little holiday has been shoved aside in favor of the next great marketing strategy. Not even a little pilgrim or horn-of-plenty. No Martha Stewart mirror decorations, no nothing. It's "make your list and check it twice" time, and "I want, I want, I want."
While we're busy wanting, I hope we take some time to be thankful for the things we already have. OK, I feel better now.

On Friday evening we marked the passing of our dear, dear friend, Deane, by scattering his ashes in the sea he so loved. He was a good man; a loving husband and father, and an extraordinary friend. He is missed, but will live on in our cherished memories. The evening was beautiful; the sea calm with the Channel Islands in view. Turning back to shore, we were thrilled to be surrounded by hundreds of dolphins and gulls, the largest group I had ever seen. I know they were all coming out to welcome Deane. He would have loved it.

And so it is Autumn--my favorite time of the year. I had another birthday to launch the season, and passed a pleasant day in my quilting room. I've decided to spend some quality time working on a number of UFO's that accumulated while I wasn't looking. The first is called "Myths of Avalon," and I had forgotten how wonderful its palette of red fabrics are. And, it is HUGE. I can see this one on my king bed, for sure.

For the past few days we've been enjoying a preview of fall weather, but today summer is making yet another attempt to cook us. Our old house, with its thick walls, will stay cool for a few days, but if the heat persists we will have to resort to air conditioning. Guess I shouldn't complain, though. It won't be long until Winter (and hopefully some rain) will make its entrance, and we will long for warmer times.

OMG! What happened to July and August? At my house, those months just flew by. we've a daughter and grandson living with us temporarily. She's in a doctoral program at USC and he is just the cutest little guy. Our big, old house is a lively place, for sure. On the quilting front, I've really been "out of my element." Other than making some totes from a Dear Jane cheater cloth, I'd never worked with pre-printed panels before, but these were just too cute and my little granddaughter loves all the "Very" books. So, for her 4th birthday, I ordered this kit. Then I got carried away with hand-quilting. Took a long time, but it turned out nicely. Some folks might say that's a lot of effort for a kid quilt, but she is a special little girl and I was able to get lots of "practice" before I settle in to work on a big Daisy quilt.

We've been home for two weeks, and once all the post-vacation chores had been done, I started to think about quilting. Oopsie Daisy, which took me much longer than I had ever planned, is very near completion, so I've promised myself to get the job done. I've a beautiful Dresden Plate done in all 30s fabrics that just needs it's binding (I got sidetracked, then kind of forgot about it.) It, too, is at the top of my "to do" list. But I need something to think about, to plan, to execute. And I have found it in a Japanese Stepping Stones pattern. I don't know where this one will end up, I've not settled on a size or actual layout. All I know is that it will have 6 panels of stones as the central motif. It will have lots of applique, and I think the quilting will be by hand in a Sashiko-style design. Could it be that my quilting muse has moved from the prairie to the Pacific Rim?

After a night of thunderstorms, we got up early to start home, leaving West Yellowstone and the rain in our wake. As soon as we crossed into Idaho, the clouds disappeared and we had a wonderful sunny day for our drive. We almost missed the turnoff for the Idaho 47 Scenic Route along Henry's Fork of the Snake River. But luckily we didn't, or we would not have seen the amazing Upper Mesa Falls area. With snowmelt and all the recent rain, the river is full to overflowing--Niagara Falls in Idaho. And the rainbow just topped off the scene. We're in Twin Falls right now and the forecast is for more rain, but we are heading south tomorrow, hopefully into more sunny weather. I'm finally getting homesick, missing my kitties and my quilting studio.

And so our time in America's First National Park is done. We were lucky to have two "extra" days to explore on our own and revisit some spectacular places. I cannot imagine a place on our planet that has such a variety of geologic wonders and amazing wildlife. I had not been here since I was a child, and I feel so lucky to have made it back. I hope that this visit will not be our last, as there is still SO MUCH to see... We head home tomorrow, taking the blue highways, curious to see what we shall see.

We are back in "civilization" tonite, after 3 days in Yellowstone, far away from TV, cell phones, and the Internet. It is a land of extreme beauty; from the otherworldly thermal features to the spectacular mountain and river views, to the amazing variety of wildlife. We saw elk, moose and bison. Yesterday we were privileged to see a mother grizzly and her cub--too far away for my poor little zoom lens, but a wonderful sight through the binoculars. And we want to see more, so we have extended our trip for 2 more days. We may never pass this way again, and there is just so much to see.

I'm exhausted. We were up at 4:15 am to get ready to be on the van by 5:10. Then it was off to Oxbow Bend to, hopefully, photograph the sunrise. But Mother Nature had other plans for us, with a thick cloud cover making for a gray morning. But, as we stood there a pair of white pelicans and a gaggle of geese entertained us, and old raven scolded us from the trees. After a short breakfast break, we were out in the field again, visiting a beaver dam behind which the clear pool provided a mirror view of the Tetons above. Then we visited an old street, called "Mormon Row." The barns were varied and photogenic. Got me to thinking, though, about how tough life on this high plateau must have been. I'll bet they got exhausted, too.

We arrived in Jackson Hole a day early so we could do a little "independent study" before meeting up with our Exploritas group. Our day trip took us through Grand Teton National Park, and just into Yellowstone (we are saving that for later.) What spectacular mountains! Our Sierras are magnificent, but these,too, are breathtaking in their sheer ruggedness. How great to be retired, and finally able to head out into the wonders of our beautiful country. Every National Park we visit is unique and wonderful in it's own way. Whichever one I'm in is my "favorite." It can't get much better than that, can it?

Today we drove from Pocatello, Idaho up to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where we will meet up with our Exploritas group. We traveled on the expansive Snake River Plain, with miles and miles of cultivated land. Potatoes are grown here, and I believe barley, as we passed a huge Budweiser Plant. Then it was up into the Snake River canyon, for river and mountain views. We walked around Jackson Hole this afternoon. It's evening and the sun seems to have prevailed for a while over the clouds. Being from Southern California, I can't get used to waiting until 9 p.m. for sunset. (Can't imagine what I'd do in Fairbanks.)

We pulled into Provo, Utah, last evening in the middle of a storm. The dust was so thick that you could not even see the mountains which surround this pretty city. This morning came, glorious, with scattered clouds in a crystal-clear blue sky. We had to use I15 for a few miles as we headed north, but that was okay; the scenery is fabulous. We ditched the interstate at Brigham City to visit the world's largest migrating bird sanctuary. Alan (DH) was able to add a few new entries into his catalog of bird pictures. Once I discovered that the mosquitos were apparently migrating, too, I shut myself in the car and let my hubby take the pictures. We took old highway 89 and then Idaho 34 to reach today's destination, Pocatello.

And so we are off for a photography adventure in Yellowstone. We are taking 4 days to get there from Southern California. We spent our first night in Cedar City, Utah, and were off early this morning. Our plan is to travel the "blue highways" as much as possible. Just out of Cedar City, up on highway 14 is Navajo Lake. Scenery like this just takes my breath away. We continued on old highway 89 up through Manti and on to Provo, where we are tonight. Although it has been very windy with a weather front coming through, we are enjoying ourselves.

Time for my monthly post. The year is moving along at a clip, but with all the winter rain, I've been spending lots of time in my quilting studio. We were able, however, to join our San Luis Obispo kids for a Spring Break trip to Big Bend, Texas. That's a long, long drive from California; three 400-mile days. Hubby and I are getting pretty adept at parking and setting up our little tent trailer. But it was worth it to see some new sights, the Rio Grande border country among them. The weather was very hot (90-100), but we made sure to get out early and late for hikes and picture-taking. We spent mid-days lolling about under the trees. It is pretty amazing to think that people actually have chosen to live and thrive in that lonely country. Maybe it's because of the amazing sunsets.

Oh my, I haven't posted for almost a month. We are in "waiting for the sun" mode-- which means travel time. The plan is to head off to Big Bend National Park in Texas for our grandkids' Spring Break. It will be a family affair, as our California and Texas kids are camping with us. I can't wait to be on the road again. We've also planned some day trips to view the California wildflowers, which should be fantastic after our rainy El Niño winter.

We've enjoyed our new fireplace a couple of times, and whenever I enter the living room I smile. I've been spending more time in the Studio with swaps and other quilting projects. I made this little funky chicken block for a swap. I enjoyed breaking out of my traditional-pattern, conservative-fabric box. The fabric is lively and funny.

Went to the Glendale Quilt Show yesterday. This year's theme is Asian Odyssey, so there are many beautiful Asian-inspired quilts on view. And the vendors really pulled out the stops on Asian fabric. Just what I need- more fabric. But I had to pick up a few choice cuts. I think I will finally actually cut into my Asian stash. The show goes through tomorrow, and I highly recommend it.

We finally decided to work on our living room. The plan has been cooking ever since we came here 7 years ago. We called it the "wall of power," and it made a nice, spacious room seem very tight. Plus, that pricey pile of rocks was most certainly not California Mission Revival style. From the first day, when all we had was a demolished wall, I knew we had made a right choice. And, 3 weeks later, this is what we have. Don't you just love home restoration?

We live in a period Spanish Revival home. It has needed a lot of work to bring it into the 21st century while simultaneously returning it to somewhat of an original look. We remodeled the kitchen 3 years ago, and 2 years ago had solar panels put on the large flat roof. A monolith of flagstone dominated the fireplace wall in the living room, and while it probably cost a bundle it just did not fit the house. The monolith came down this morning, and hiding behind was the footprint of the original fireplace. Picture this in smooth white plaster with a mantel, a tasteful border of tile around the firebox and a raised tile hearth. That is the picture I have in my mind's eye. Soon it will be reality. It's nice to have workmen in the house again--at least for a while :)

And so it is February. January was not the best, with the passings of my sister and a dear family friend. But having quilting friends and a steady stream of houseguests have proved the best medicine to keep me on track and busy. I'm looking forward to February, as it is my turn to be the lucky recipient of quilting bee blocks. I asked that we all do simple crazy quilt blocks, finished size 7". Since our group is only 12, I am thinking of a crazy medallion, or a wall hanging if the blocks turn out to be ornate. The picture shows my "sample" block. The fabrics are from a kit I ordered a few years back. I think crazy will turn out much better than the kit's design.

Last week I had an opportunity to do some walking in the old Pueblo de Los Angeles. The day was clear and sunny, with the temperature in the low 80s. That's how January is out here. But today we are FINALLY getting a little moisture. Woefully little, though, as the sun is scheduled to return tomorrow. I noticed that I have been silent for a long time. December passed in a happy blur, and January has been sad, as my 84-year-old sister passed away last week. Not unexpected, and she is in a better place, but sad nevertheless. I am looking forward to the weekend, though. My quilting buddy is coming on the train and we will be taking in "Road to California," a huge quilt show at the Ontario Convention Center. I will be sure to put a little camera in my purse. Do I need any more quilting things? No. Will I come home with irresistible goodies? Yes.

Has it been a month since I've posted? Apparently, yes. November passed as a blur of quiltmaking--for grandchildren-- and preparing for Thanksgiving. The latter was a success, and I am just about done with the former. Still have to finish binding Karli's quilt. It will be done in time for shipping this weekend. I took a "breather" yesterday and today to make another Basketcase block, and learn about ruching. I'm not big on 3-D quilt elements, but the flowers did turn out well. I do like this little 6" block.

We've been home for a week now, and I am finally out from under the task of editing all those vacation photos. I love travel, but since I'm part of this family, taking photos is a must. AND sitting with PhotoShop (Elements for me---the others can be smarties) for hours as penance for enjoying the travel so much. I don't mind, really, and if this is all I have to complain about, then I am fortunate.

I think this photo will be the inspiration for a small quilt project--although who knows when I will ever get around to it? I have 3 "kid quilts" to finish in time for Christmas, and any number of WIPs to attend to. But, if it is meant to be it will happen.

Utah Rocks

Tonight I am in Las Vegas, visiting family as we head home from a wonderful two weeks on the road, traveling to Utah for a week-long Exploritas photography expedition. On our way out, we spent time at North Rim of Grand Canyon and two wonderful nights at The View Hotel in Monument Valley. They are special places, and I never tire of return visits.

Our home base for Exporitas was Moab, Utah. What a place! Two National Parks and other natural wonders all within hours' driving distance. The scenery was spectacular, a point-and-shooter's dream; I was tempted, but did not put the camera on full automatic even once. I love my Digital Rebel, and am determined to test out all its nifty features. And, I am seriously considering integrating some photographs into a wall hanging or quilt.

We are still "on the way" to join up with our Elderhostel group in Moab, Utah. We spent the past two nights at North Rim in Grand Canyon. The weather was perfect and we got some stunning pictures. Today, we traveled here via Marble Canyon, where we stopped at the bridge and saw two giant California Condors in flight. Magnificent. The icing on the cake, however, has got to be this view from our room at our hotel, owned and operated by the Navajo tribe, and right in Monument Valley. It is called THE VIEW, and the view certainly can't get better than this. We will be up early to get sunrise photographs, then head out at 8:30 with a Navajo guide, for a little photo expedition. Who said retirement would be boring?

And so we are getting ready to head out again. Not to the hills this time, but on a photographic expedition to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Elderhostel has become Exploritas--I guess the baby boomers have a problem with the term elder. In my day, it meant experienced and worthy of respect. I am proud to be an elder. But, by whatever title, we have enjoyed our previous trips and look forward to this one. On our way out to Utah, we have planned stops at North Rim of Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. We may be snowed out of the former; if so, we will head to Page, Arizona, to see Antelope Canyon.

I spent today making birthday siggies to mail out for October and November and prepping handwork to take along for the quiet times in our hotel room. I've a ton of applique to complete for Oopsie Daisy, so I surely won't be bored.

We will not be out of email, or wifi range this trip, so I may even do some "on the road" blogging.

Wow! It's been three weeks since I've had time to put fingers to keyboard. We spent a wonderful week traveling in the Eastern Sierras and into Yosemite. We hiked and took lots of pictures. We even saw a big, brown, black bear. Such fun, and the fall colors were amazing. Then, my best buddy, BW came down to my house for a much-needed quilting retreat. Our new project is called Oopsie Daisy, and has been featured lately in the Keepsake Quilting catalog. We both had picked up the pattern a while ago, and between our extensive stashes of 30s fabric, this one will be a keeper. Lots of applique, though, to slow me down.

This morning, I made the little October basket block for my Yahoo! Group, and I've been "cogitating" over ideas for two blocks swaps that I have to get done before we leave for Utah in two weeks. We are going out to Canyonlands and Arches with Elderhostel. I am so looking forward to this, as we've wanted to visit that part of the US for many years. Then, it will be time to settle down and face the holiday season. I can't believe how this year has flown. Time is relentless in its march, for certain.

I have 6 grandchildren, but only one grandson. And now that he's 3, it's time to move on from his sweet baby quilt to a real "big boy" design. I had so much fun working with the bright, primary colors---like playing with that wonderful 64-color box of my childhood. I got the patterns for the large transportation blocks from a great book, Block Magic, and the prints are from a cute Michael Miller kids' collection. I'm thinking of a cozy, flannel back for snuggling. Because it will get plenty of use, I plan to have it quilted in an overall pattern.

I was happy to be invited to join yet another Yahoo! quilting group. It's a BOM, and we're making little baskets. I had already decided to go dormant on my STUD group, since I have participated every month for the past year and my quiltie wall is pretty full. I'm still in two other quilting bee groups, though, so my swapping times are most definitely not over. The "teaser" basket pattern for September was just too cute to resist. And these blocks will be all for ME! I have a slew of leftover Oriental prints from a Sudoku top I did last year. They are so pretty and I will use them as the focus for my blocks. And, my dental hygienist gave me some very lovely silk "scraps" that she no longer wanted. The dark blue makes a perfect background for these little 6" blocks.

I've finally diverted my attention from the fire, which is not under control by any means, but is just too overwhelming to continue to think about. We are safe, and I have lots to do in the Studio since it's too yucky to venture outside. We will be back on the road mid-month, so I need to get my swap obligations under control, not to mention preparations for an early October retreat with my quilting buddy, BW. This block is for a Bee Pieceful quilter, Rachel. I love her choice of fabrics and I hope she likes the star pattern I found at Quilters Cache, online. It is very liberating to only have to think about finishing ONE block. I don't know that I would consider making 20 of these, but I enjoyed making this one.

The fabrics are a great lot of fun, and once I did a little "research" on Quilt Pro, I was ready to jump in. I made 3 blocks today, this one being the largest at 12.5" (12" finished.) They will be mailed off to Colorado in the morning.

PS--to those in the fire area, you are in my thoughts. We raised our kids up there, and I will always feel attached to La Crescenta.

And so, we are once again into the fire season. We Californians do not have to deal with floods or hurricanes, but in these years of drought, wildfires are a constant threat. Unlike the occasional earthquake, they happen every year, and when the temperatures soar, so do our fears. We returned from a wonderful week in the Sierras to this horriffic sight. While we are safe, our former home where we raised our girls is just about in the center of this picture, behind the first ridge, just above the signal. Our valiant firefighters have so far managed to save all the homes up there. Let us hope that they will prevail.

It's the middle of August, and I have been quiet for a long time. Life has returned to it's routine, and I have been busy in the Studio, but with nothing that is blogworthy. We're in a holding pattern until we leave for camping mid-week. But I have not been idle. Not by a long shot.

You cannot imagine how much fun it has been to have a grandson. He turned 3 this past week, but from the moment of his arrival, my outlook has changed. The whole concept of male child is foreign to me. I come from a family of 5 girls, and I have 3 daughters. Naturally, pastels and lace and ruffles are my milieu. And quilts--is there anything more warm and feminine? I made quilts to celebrate the arrival of all the grandbabies, always using sweet, 30s fabrics. And the little girls are getting new quilts as they grow. Sweet, pastel, and girlie. I've a handle on that.

So, Danny's Quilt will be my first foray into boyland. He's very into machines, so the theme is transportation. I've gathered lots of cute patterns, and am having about as much fun as a grandma quilter can have. I had hoped to have it done sooner, but a lady named Jane diverted my attention. Now, I'm on a roll, and it'll be done, and all the better for the passage of a little time.

July Swaps

We've been back to our normal, quiet routine for two weeks. How time flies! Isn't it just the truth that we spend so much time anticipating special events, and then they are over and done and we are back to "real life." Well, those two weeks were special and fun. I miss my grandbabies terribly, but Skype can help with that. I'm back in my Studio, and busily finishing swaps so that I can be clear for camping mid-August. I made the little sailboat quilt for a "Summer Luv"-themed swap. Don't we all love the seashore? And the star block is for an August quilting bee. I really love two-color blocks, and I think this one turned out nicely. I also did a couple blocks from Halloween fabric for a second August swap. Hard to believe (unless I look in the mirror) that I'm starting my fifth year of retirement and have lots to keep me busy, for sure.

How does one participate in a quilting bee when we never meet face-to-face and are scattered all over the country? That was my concern when I joined BUZZ Cuts on Flickr. But the idea was intriguing, for sure. I was up in June, and dutifully sent out my fabric, hoping for the best. Except for one flake-out, I was more than satisfied with the blocks I received back. I asked for blocks that would finish 12" or 9" or 6". Once received, I used coordinating fabric to create twenty-five 12" blocks (the pic only shows 4 of the 5 rows, but you get the idea.) I saved one fabric for sashing strips and binding. I think it turned out well.

What fun! The whole family has been bunking in with us since the beginning of the month. It's organized (and sometimes not) chaos, but I am happy to have us all under one roof and the little ones getting to know one another. Today we went to the dinosaur museum at Exposition Park in LA. These are my little "touristas," sunglasses and all, who also saw their first IMAX movie today. Grandma is pooped.

I've pretty much kept a low profile (by choice) with holiday family outings--using my time at home to keep up with behind-the-scenes necessities. But I was ready to step out last night. Our destination-- the Griffith Observatory with its panoramic views of Los Angeles, California. And additionally, the opportunity, on a "closed" night, to take our tripods out to photograph the city lights. Icing on the cake was the full moon, illuminating the scene as a beacon in the sky. While a little hazy, it was a wonderful evening to be out taking pictures.

although it certainly could be. I have felt like a shut-in lately, working on triangles and not doing much of anything else (by choice, as I must admit that I have seem to have a recluse gene.) But, with family in town for a while, we recognize that we can't play in the pool forever and need easy reasons to get away from the house. Our community farmers' market is a Sunday tradition, and this weekend we had a car show, to boot. We walked, gawked, and took pictures. I bought just-picked corn to cook as a side for our baby-back-rib barbecue, and yummy nectarines for the kidlets to enjoy. All in all, a very nice Sunday.

And so now you see why I have been so quiet as of late. Because my best quilting buddy is my enabler (as I am hers, I must confess,) I bought the book, American Jane's Quilts for All Seasons, or No Reason. This one fell into the latter category, but I liked it anyway. 1440 little diamonds (or 2880 triangles) later, this is what I have. The Snowy Peaks are evident, for sure. I did a pretty good pinning job, but even with 90% accuracy, I'd probably have a couple hundred flat points.... who's counting, certainly not me.

I am in the midst of a family reunion. Because our children live in diverse areas, we have not been in the same place with ALL our children and grandchildren in two years. We've all met here at "home" for the 4th of July weekend, and some time beyond. The little ones were babies last time, and it is just so much fun to watch the 3-and-4-year-olds get acquainted. The weather is cooperating, being nice and warm enough to enjoy the pool, but not so hot that it's uncomfortable to be outside.

I have been stuck in blogger's limbo lately, as I'm in the Studio working on a quilt that has no end of triangles. I've been there for over a week, and am finally seeing the end of the "triangle line." But, as for my photography, I have most definitely hit a low point. So...I decided to toot my DH's horn, as he would never do so himself. To wit, there is not a bird in the vicinity of our house whose privacy has not been invaded by his telephoto lens. It is just amazing. We live in a strictly urban area, but share our space with numerous avian neighbors. His photostream is pretty amazing, so I invite you to take a peek.

I've completed two more swaps. First, three stars for Mary in my BUZZ Cuts group. This is such a fun group. Over the course of 16 months, each of us will send out fabric and receive blocks to create a quilt top. I am the June person, and have received most of my blocks. They are all very pretty, and my task of putting them into a coherent top will be enjoyable. I've been thinking about possibilities for a few days now.

The second is a quiltie for my other Flicker group, Swap Til You Drop. My partner mentioned that she loves blue and white; I do, too, and had a number of orphan star blocks that I've been saving for the right moment. It came, and I am delighted to share.

Never thought it would happen, but I am now a Facebook person. My son-in-law convinced my DH to join up-- and I was not going to be left out in the cold. Pretty amazing. Another means of keeping in contact with interesting people. Who said retirement would be boring?

And so I am home from Paso. We spent a long weekend with the goal of finishing our current project, Quilter's Puzzle. I am happy to report that the goal was met. I have a top that is large enough to cover our king-size bed, and one that I will withstand cat attention. As soon as I get a back ready, it is off to the longarm quilter.

While I love my online quilting swaps, I have never been interested in joining a guild. I am not gregarious by nature. My friend, BW, and I have a "guild of two." She is president when we meet at her house, and I am president when we meet here. This is a tradition going back many years. It started when we used our quilting to decompress after long weeks in the classroom. Now, living many miles apart, we continue to meet for our retreats. The pictures show our latest effort from first cutting of fabric through to a completed top.

Tying Up the Loose Ends

I finished my Spring Fling blocks and they are currently winging their way to Colorado. I finished on time; now I'll just wait for the return package of surprises. Lots of fun. As I said before, it is fun to interpret Dear Jane in new ways. I'm considering a quilt of selected DJ blocks done 8" or 10" (or both) with an Amish look. We will see. I certainly have enough ideas to last me the rest of my life. Problem is, each day brings a new idea.

I spent today preparing for a little train ride to Paso Robles. Boxed up 22 anvil blocks and a batch of fabric--my homework for our latest Retreat Quilt (Piecer's Puzzle is its name.) With any luck, I will return with a completed top. I am looking forward to a few days filled with quilting fun--and no housework.

About a year ago, I bought two new quilt books, Dear Jane and Quilted Diamonds. Jane caught my fancy first, and in the months from June '08 to February '09 I finished Jean's Addiction. Just last week, I put that quilt into the capable hand of my long-arm quilter, Pat Rollie. She has won many awards and has had her work featured in quilting magazines, so I know I will be more than satisfied with the result. I thought about hand-quilting, but figured I'd be 90 years old before it was finished:)

Those diamonds, however, have been in the back of my mind. Recently I bought the Quilted Diamonds II book. I have never hand-pieced a quilt, so this will be a new experience. My color scheme, rather than blues, will be red and black. I've lots of both, so my goal is to make this a totally stash-driven quilt. And, rather than becoming all-consumed, I want to take my time. This will be my backup project. I plan to assemble some packets to take along as handwork on future trips away from home. I will not rush this one.

The great thing about Swap Til U Drop (STUD) is that I have a chance to try techniques that I would never otherwise do--either because of personal taste, or fear. My May quiltie, Earth Mandala, is a perfect example. We had an alphabet theme, and I got "E." I thought about eggs, and elephants, and emus, and the environment. Then it hit me--EARTH! I downloaded that famous NASA picture of the Earth rising, as seen from the Moon. I printed the picture onto fabric, and the rest just kind of happened. For no good reason, I even used beads to picture the 12 signs of the Zodiac in the blue heavens. For old "Scrap Quilt Jean," this is certainly a trip into new creative territory..

And so we passed 2 full days cutting fabric, laughing, shop-hopping and sewing seams. Our quilts, when finished, will consist of 20 of these tessellating anvil blocks. The quilts will be 90" x 100" -- a nice quilt for a queen bed, or topper for a king. The plan is to complete our block allotment by our next meeting. Then, we'll slap on the sashings, assemble the tops and take them to the longarm lady. Tomorrow my quilting buddy heads home on the train. But we did have fun, and will retreat again soon.

Still Spring Flinging

Spent a nice, quiet Mother's Day doing what, in the absence of children and grandchildren, I like to do best---playing in The Studio. My DH found a Dodgers game on the tube, so was happily involved. I did have phone calls from my Dear Daughters, Moms themselves, and we all exchanged good wishes.

I wanted to finish this fifth set of Spring Fling blocks so that I have all next week "free" to enjoy quality retreat time with my greatest quilting friend, BW. We started cutting our quilts at her house in February, and the goal is to raid my stash for the remaining fabric and get down to some serious Bernina dueling. It's nice to have two machines that live here. AND, of course there will be a little shop hopping-- can't have a retreat without that (and food, and wine, and....) Tomorrow I need to do the usual last minute tidying up (I did a major cleaning 2 weeks ago, but The Studio never sits idle when we're at home) and put fresh blades in all the rotary cutters and new needles in the machines.

It will be a fun week, and I am certain it will pass all too quickly. As they say, "Time flies when you're having fun"--- and I plan to have FUN!

The Hardest Thing

The hardest part of owning pets is having to make the decision that it "is time" for your sweet companion animal to be put down. Lil Bit had not been doing well for a few months. She began losing weight and her little frame was looking more and more gaunt. She drank lots and lots of water and until a couple of weeks ago, she ate pretty well. And she still wanted to hang out all day and sleep next to me every night. She continued her nightly ritual of carrying my slippers all over the house; she was a definite little worker bee. And then, over the weekend, things changed. She hardly ate anything, and just started acting that way. Like she felt unwell and just was at loose ends. She did a lot of wandering aimlessly through the house.

So today I took her to the vet, hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. Turns out her kidneys had totally failed. He said that I could bring her home and watch her decline for a few weeks. But what would that accomplish? I asked that she be euthanized, so that she would not suffer further. We had 15 years together. What would a few more days mean?

So, she is gone--surviving her brother Rudi by 51 weeks and her brother Butch by 8 months. Good bye, Bit, and look for your brothers in Kitty Heaven. You are in a better place.

It has been a nice, slow week here in Glendale. I've been wanting to begin posts for May, but what to say? Well, I finished my fourth set of blocks for the Spring Fling swap. I still hold that these were much easier to piece than the original in Jean's Addiction. Took two afternoons, start to finish. Since I love 30s prints, this swap is more of a pleasure than a chore. I also made 3 blocks to send to this month's BUZZ Cuts quilter -- and , since I'm up next, I actually got all my fabrics cut. I'm really excited to the the one in June.

So, after all the straightening and arranging that I did in the Studio a couple of weeks ago, by looking at it , you'd think almost nothing happened. But, with a little effort this weekend, it will be ready for a retreat next week.

Catch-Up Day

Back when I was a teacher, I'd earmark an occasional Friday as a "catch-up day." I'd allow my students to bring in an assignment that hadn't been turned in on time and finish it up for credit. I felt that if work was worth assigning, it was worth finishing. It gave them a little assist with needed credit, and I had time to catch up on paper-grading. I'm far past those days now, but I often find myself in over my head with need-to-finish projects. So I allowed myself time today to tie up a few loose ends. I finally finished my swap pincushion. Actually, it turned into a combination pincushion/catchall box. I will have it on its way to the UK in the morning. Then I made a Birthday Siggie for the only May birthday girl, and I'll get it off really soon. Finally, I worked on the next batch of blocks for Spring Fling --Springbok Park (K12??). Funny, but mass-producing Dear Jane blocks seems easier than making them singly. I'll have them done, tomorrow, for sure. I'll have my plate clear and ready to go for the May swaps.

I finished this a while ago, and now I can show it off. I made this little quilt for the April Swap Til You Drop. I pulled out all the stops (for me) on this one, with yo-yo flowers, applique, and stippling. The thing I really enjoy about this group, other than the great people involved, is that I can try out techniques that I might never use in "real life." I'm a sucker for those oh-so-sweet 30s fabrics; I think I have every edition of Aunt Grace right here my stash, which as I mentioned, is embarrassingly large. Working on the project lifted my spirits, for sure.

My second set for the Dear Jane Spring Fling swap is done. G-7 Indianapolis. It's fun to re-do the blocks in springy 30s prints. A whole different vibe. My plan is to participate for a couple of years, hoping to collect the foundation of a Springy Jane quilt. The morning passed quickly and enjoyably.

This afternoon, however, I jumped head first into a much-needed renovation of my quilting room (affectionately known as The Studio.) I wanted to straighten up and rearrange-- right down to the walls. We've been in the house almost 7 years, and today was the first time since moving in that I'd moved some of that furniture. You can just imagine the dust monkeys that I liberated! I'm all stuffed up and sneezy for sure, but a little more cleaning and The Studio will be nice and spiffy. The downside is I can no longer deny that I am addicted to fabric; I have more on hand than I could use in a hundred years. This stash has got to be downsized. I'm thinking of donating to the local quilt guild, as they do charitable projects. And I've heard that Goodwill will accept fabric, too. It's a shame the schools out here no longer offer sewing-- I'd gladly supply a classroom with lots of good fabric.

And, of course, I got motivated on the hottest April 20th on record. Go figure.

I got to pick some of my favorite blocks, and the 30s fabrics are really cute. So, I've completed the first 5 of my 30 promised blocks.

Home Again

We had a wonderful 8 days on our Grand Canyon Odyssey with Elderhostel. We visited Grand Canyon and Marble Canyon. We took a pontoon raft trip on the Colorado River in Glen Canyon, and we photographed California Condors from the Navajo Bridge. Our fellow Hostelers were wonderful traveling companions. Our guide and coordinator, Karen Landis, is a genuine "cowboy" and we learned lots about ranchers and ranching in the Arizona Strip. Lots of laughter, camaraderie, and breathtaking scenery. We returned home happily exhausted. What a welcome sight was our own front door! Now it's back to real life. I've a swap quilt to finish up, and a renovation of The Studio in anticipation of a visit from my best quilting buddy, BW. And, of course, a few hundred photographs to cull through.

I like to post something on a fairly regular basis, but it's been a real down time for activities, quilts, or photographs. This cactus is safely in captivity at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, California. We took a stroll over there last week to check out the Abraham Lincoln exhibit and check out the cactus garden. We were not disappointed on either front. I always love the symmetry of the cacti-- in this case, a wonderful spiral out from that center point. The delicate pink flower surely contrasts with the prickly background. Maybe there's a metaphor here. This picture makes me think back to my early days of teaching in the "inner city," and any number of lovely young people-- delicate flowers-- who managed to survive and thrive, and against all odds, prevail in a world that was set against them.

Soon I will again be seeing cactus "in the wild." Tomorrow we leave for an 8-day Elderhostel trip to Grand Canyon. I'm having fits with packing-- one day it's warm, even hot; the next, it's a return to winter. Oh me, oh my. But, we are going to see new territory, and take lots of pictures. Maybe we'll even have phone or internet access--but probably not. So I'll have lots to share when I return.

Originally uploaded by JAmundsenAnd so Rocky, our very fluffy--and huge--tabby, went in for his annual "lion cut" yesterday. Some people may think this is a cruel fate for a fluffy kitty, but I disagree. Rocky just loves to go outdoors and roll under the azaleas. Do you know about azalea litter? It is sticky, and in a long-haired kitty, it is a disaster. Rocky (to be known as "Simba" for the next several months), even after daily brushings, had begun to develop those mats and fur balls that are oh, so nasty. I think he is still a very handsome kittyman. The cutest part is the tuft of fur at the tip of his tail, which, unfortunately, I could not get in the picture.

Crazy Heart

Just call me crazy. Yesterday, having nothing better (ha!) to do, I decided to spend some time revisiting the Foundation Factory and Carol Doak software that I had purchased some months ago, but had not really looked at, being in the thrall of Dear Jane. When I came across the "hearts," I just had to make one. The fabric was from my stash of fat quarters. I've had it for years. It only took a couple of hours, plus a few minutes to lay down the little roses. I put grosgrain ribbon into the other heart seams.

And, since DJ proved I could do it, I am ready to commit the time and effort of a genuine crazy quilt. This little block gave me a chance to work with lovely colors and play around (a very little bit) with embellishing. I have two excellent books on crazy quilting, and a box of elegant scraps in velvet and satin. Jane is finally losing her hold and I am thinking of a new addiction.

As I've said before, I really enjoy the monthly mini-quilt swap. Every month is a different theme-- March is "Japanese," so I was able to venture far from my comfort zone of traditional scrap quilts. And I am fine with that. Truth to tell, I have always loved those beautiful Asian fabrics. Problem is, I buy them, but won't cut them because they are "too pretty." Go figure. I did, however, make a Sudoku quilt last year, which I've yet to sandwich and quilt; but I will, soon. This little quiltie came from the sudoku leftovers, and a machine-embroidery patch I made a year or so ago when I was in a frenzy of buying patterns and playing with my embroidery module. I recently learned about sashiko embroidery and decided to try it out. It fits my style--nice, even stitches that are not too small. I was sad to part with this quiltie, but I know I will be recompensed with a pretty Japanese quilt from Kimmie.

And so I am back from 3 days of quilting with my great friend BW. Our new project is called "Piecer's Puzzle," and it consists of 20 blocks made up of four tesselated anvil patterns. We made a raid on her stash and pulled a variety of great fabrics. Then we set up our factory on the dining room table, leaving just enough space to set out dinner. By the end of a day we had made good progress on cutting fabric, although not getting as far as we had envisioned. We had enough for one quilt. On the second day we sewed, making 240 half-square triangles. We met our goal, and plan to meet at my house in May to pull enough more fabric to complete 2 quilts. With good luck we may even be able to start on some blocks. Or not. Two stashes make for wonderful variety, and we will have all the fixins cut and ready for a third get-together where the sound of dueling Berninas will fill the air.

I have never been much of a joiner, epecially when it comes to my quilting. My "guild" consists of me and my best quilting buddy, BW. It's been that way for years, and I am happy. But she had the good fortune to move to a lovely part of the wine country, leaving the hustle and bustle of city life behind. Our guild meetings happen 4 or 5 times a year; in fact, I board Amtrak on Monday to spend a few days of quality quilting time with her.
When I started my journey with Dear Jane, I had every intention of working on my own. I was going to put up a set of my work on Flickr for friends and family to see. When I found Dear Baby Jane (That Quilt) and The Dear Jane Project on Flickr, my photos went public. I found the Janiacs on the DJ website, so I became one and joined the Dear Jane listserv. I've enjoyed reading the many posts, and the BOW and TOW challenges motivated me to finish my top, Jean's Addiction.
I signed up for the siggie (signature block) swap because I think it will be a fun memento of this past year. I've finished my first 36 blocks, and already I'm thinking about what I will do with the siggies I receive in May. I am becoming something of a "joiner" after all. "Never say 'never'," should be my motto.

And so I sewed on the final border today. Jean's Addiction is officially a complete top. Actually, a little more than complete. Eagle-eyes may notice an extra triangle in the border. That's because I decided on 1.5" sashing strips with little setting squares after I had completed lots of triangles. I knew the measurement would be off, so I decided to add an extra triangle on each side to make everything fit (thanks, Dear Hannah.)
I must say that I was anxious to take the picture of this top on a real bed, and begin to bring this adventure to a close (I've never spent anywhere near 7 months straight on any project.) I need to put together a suitable back, then get this baby off to my longarm quilter to quilt only the sashings. I plan to hand-quilt the individual blocks, but if I don't, it'll still be a quilt.

The theme for February was paper piecing, so I decided to try a circular pattern. It was funny, though, when I finished the quilt, it looked like a place mat :) Luckily I found a workable background fabric in my stash, and added some beads in the center. I have had so much fun with the swaps. As soon as I update my quiltie wall I will take a picture to share with everyone.

We love picnics! Especially in a beautiful park in February. Of course, since we rarely see it, or have to shovel it, we REALLY love to go to the snow. While we did not get to actually sit at this table, we did spend the long Presidents' Day weekend in the snow with our daughter, SIL, and 3 delightful granddaughters. The "trip to the snow" in January or February is becoming a tradition. We've always traveled to the Muir Lodge at Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. It's a very comfortable accommodation, and the young 'uns can play in the snow, and we oldsters can indulge our photography interest and (in my case) sit comfortably in front of a warm fire doing handwork (in the past, redwork; this year, a hexagon charm quilt.)

I wanted to show off my last kite and my Virtual Design Wall, but apparently Flickr and Blogspot are having difficulties getting in sync. So, I'll just report now and post pictures later. I finished the Bottom Right Corner Kite (BRC) for Jean's Addiction today. So all the piecing is done, the center is set, and the borders are all assembled. I need to attach the borders, and this top will be ready to send to my longarm quilter to make the sandwich and quilt the sashings. My plan is to bind it, then hand-quilt the blocks at my leisure. I started this journey on June 25, 2008--- so I've averaged about a block a day to get to

Ask me how I spent my Monday. All day. Working on this 68-piece corner "kite" for Jean's Addiction. Given that the block measures 8" x 8", that's a lot of little blocks :) I was disapppointed that my DJ software didn't have a foundation pattern, so I had to make my own. And with a block like this, accuracy is of utmost importance. I had to re-sew quite a few seams. But the result is a pretty nice. While the background is very busy, it actually looks better "in person."
I've just the final corner kite to piece, and I will have all the components of a complete DJ top. The center blocks have all been set, and I've put together the triangle borders. Just need to add them to the top and Jean's Addiction will be a completed quilt top.

I have been following the weather news from around the USA and around the world. I truly feel great sympathy for those in our East and Southeast who are freezing, without electricity, water, and other necessities. Here's hoping that relief will be coming your way very soon. And to my online friends Down Under, I can commiserate with your suffering in the current heat wave. Here in Southern California, we can get extended periods of unseasonable heat-- and the wildfires that go with it. We had our fires last Fall, but our winter has been mild-- even warm. Today was a beautiful 81 degrees. Not too warm to take a walkabout to see the beginnings of Spring in our little corner of the world. We are hoping for rain, however, as the mountain snowpack is low and the years-long water shortage continues. California's economy is going to heck in a handbasket, and we do get some shaking now and then. But, taken all around, I feel spoiled and fortunate to be a lifelong Californian.

I had been having so much fun with the mini-quilt swap, that I signed up for a quilt block swap, the goal being to help 15 other quilters with their quilts and getting 16 blocks in return. And, this experience will really take me out of my comfort zone. Witness my first efforts. I love scrap quilts and traditional fabrics. Very neat. Very tidy. But, when you have a floral that's 4 inches across, what to do? And those colors--so bright! Oh my! So I decided to combine the old with the new, flying geese with paper piecing with Heather Bailey fabrics. I may be a senior citizen, but I'm not too old to try something new. I made a "proto" of this block in my own bright, cheery fabrics, so I can happily send this block off to its rightful recipient. My plan is to make a proto each month, so that at the end I will have both a quilt and a memory quilt, too.

I never would have believed it, but I have come to really enjoy making little quilts for sharing (swapping.) The small format means I can get the piecing done fairly quickly, and I have a chance to practice a variety of techniques and develop new skills. And, best of all, I have a succession of talented quilters to help me decorate the Studio. For January, I sent off a quiltie that I named "Chinoiserie," because I tried for an Asian look. In return I received the cutest, happy little Ohio Star done in 30s reprints. As you can see from the photos, quilties aren't the only things trading places. Something yummy, either fabric or edible, usually finds its way into the package. Who could ask for more than that?

Once again, I post Jean's Addiction in Virtual Design Wall format. I "only" have 13 triangles and 2 corner kites to complete. I've been very busy the past couple of weeks, so my output is about a block a day. But I have been working on little setting squares and the final strips of sashing. I'm putting the sides together as I go, rather than waiting. My huge binder is becoming thinner and thinner. Maybe getting ready to be passed on the the next budding Janiac. The irony is that after all this, I've finally settled on the paper-piecing method that works well for me. LOL Alas.

So, I am seriously into finishing this quilt top. Now that I've settled on sashing/setting triangles, I can go to town, setting as I go. The center of the Jean's Addiction is all done, so my focus now is on the border triangles. Curiously, they are going together much easier than before-- or maybe I am becoming less picky. Whatever. I have set the goal of having this entire top ready to quilt by Easter. My plan is to ask my long-arm quilter to deal with sashings and setting squares, leaving the actual blocks for me to hand quilt. That way, however long the hand quilting takes, I will have a "quilt" to display.

Today, DH and I started out for the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. Our destination was an exhibit on the craftsman architects Greene & Green. But there was hardly a parking space to be had-- apparently today was a "free" day, and very welcome, indeed. We decided to wait until next week, and headed to Descanso Gardens, in La Canada Flintridge, to see if the camellias had started their bloom. Mostly, no, but a few plants were flowery. Another few weeks, and the blooms will be spectacular. And we walked through the last vestiges of the rose garden. A few bushes still had blooms; the volunteers were busy with winter pruning. And some other bushes were bedecked entirely in rose hips, formidable little things, with their protective thorns and tough hides. I'm trying to learn how to take quality photographs, and one result is that I am learning to really look at my surroundings, with all the lights and patterns and colors. A great Christmas gift was the macro lens which lets me get up close and personal with my environment.

It's the real deal. Tomorrow I will set rows L and M. The center will be all done, and if I never sew another DJ block, I have a quilt. But, not to worry. I plan to finish the triangles (I've done 32, so not TOO many to go) at a more leisurely pace. It'll be a pleasure to spread my interest around to WIPs and new projects. My goal for a totally finished (other than hand quilting) Jean's Addiction is June 25, 2009--- exactly one year from the day I started my journey.

And so the house is back to its everyday look. Today I took down the outdoor lights and decorations, put the tree back in its box (yes, we use a fabulous fake), and the ornaments back in the basement; all the odds and ends of Christmas are gone for 11 months.
I do so love the season, and this day always depresses me a bit. Even when I was a child, I hated to witness the end of the magic. Maybe next year, when I'm really old, I will just let the house remain in its holiday garb. But then, that would take away all the specialness of the time.
And so, it's into another year. Do I dare be hopeful that a change of Administration will send us and the world onto a brighter path? Only time will tell.

We passed a great few days with our Central Coast children and grandchildren. Got out for a few photo ops, which were very enjoyable as they involved healthful walking and beautiful coastal scenery. I had a chance to use my new macro lens; it's making me look for the small things that we mostly pass by in our quest for pictures. This picture shows some denizens of the tide pools, with two sea urchins predominant. I loved the pastel colors. I am thinking that this palette will find itself in a quilt sooner rather than later.

I've also been busy setting the center of Jean's Addiction. Spent today making little setting squares for another 4 rows-- which will allow me to have rows A-K all set. My goal is to have the entire center set by the end of the week, which is very do-able. I will have a picture, for sure, when it's done :)

And so I've finished all the blocks for the center of Jean's Addiction. I've begun setting the rows, too. I have 5 rows all done and expect to have the setting done by the end of next week. I am very satisfied, as I have achieved my major goal of finishing the center blocks by the end of 2008.

Which brings me to the topic of New Year's Resolutions. Do I dare publish all (or any)? Would that make me hold onto the resolve? I don't know. I will say, however, that I am resolved to finish a number of works in progress (aka UFOs) in 2009.

Finally, as we approach the last hours of the last day of the year, allow me to wish you a happy and healthy 2009!

It's a quiet Christmas Eve at our house. Just me, my DH, and our 5 cats. Which is not a bad thing. We had a daughter, son-in-law, and grandson here last night, and a very nice time it was, with a fire in the fireplace and pre-Christmas cheer. They were back on the road this morning, hoping to get up the coast to Los Osos before the rains set in. All the little West Coast cousins will be together to wait for Santa. Somebody better have a camera handy, is what I hope. We will be joining the party after Christmas, and I've baked up a whole batch of oatmeal cookies to take along.

So, wherever you are, and whatever your situation--I wish you the merriest of holidays and a happy New Year!

And so, with Christmas just a day away and the New Year just over a week from now, I am pleased to report that, in just 7 blocks, the center of Jean's Addiction will be all done. I have never spent 6 months straight on a quilt, for sure. Over the weekend, I put the first 5 rows together, and once I did that, the old enthusiasm returned. Or, rather, a wish to have this quilt top a done deal. The plan is to keep at it until the center is all together, then work on the triangles at a more leisurely pace. The siren song of a new project is ringing in my ears. How long can I resist?

I've been waltzing around committing to a setting plan for the DJ quilt for some time. I'd gathered fabric for sashing, but as it is a discontinued line and I had fussy cutting in mind, I was a little bit scared. What would happen if I ran out of sashing fabric before Jeans Addiction was done? After lots of thought (and dreams), I made my decision, and this is it. Today, I put together Rows A,B,C blocks 1-4. Having settled on using cornerstones, I can set the quilt in "chunks" and watch it grow. And, yes, those cornerstones measure 1" square. Foundation-pieced, for sure! It is about time for this to start becoming a quilt, rather than a collection of blocks saved in a big binder. This will motivate me to keep working. And, of course thanks go to Anina, for all her wonderful advice.

It's not hand made, but it is home made, so fits into this year's mantra. If you are like me, among your favorite things are your computer and your camera (in no particular order.) That being so, you really ought to think about a themed calendar as a gift idea. I started this family calendar last year, and it was a great hit, so why mess with a good thing?
I'm a proud grandma, and what better way to have pics of "my babies" prominently displayed? I mobilize the troops in October with a December 1st deadline. Their mission: select favorite pictures from the current year and make sure they are available to me (we use Flickr and Shutterfly, but there are many choices out there). My part is simple--pick my favorite favorites and spend an hour or two in layout mode. The calendar also has all of our important dates, so birthdays and anniversaries are rarely missed.

BTW : I broke the rules, but I was at a loss for a cover picture. These girls really are MY babies--this picture is from Christmas 1977.

And so it comes down to the wire and I am still up to my armpits in sequins. I know how those elves must feel! I'm hoping to get all the hand-made gifts done this weekend, then I can whip up a few pretty Christmas cards for special friends and family. Now that we're retired, courtesy cards for co-workers are a thing of the past, and I had given up on mass mailings years ago. I've a huge fabric stash and a great sewing machine with embroidery module-- so this year the motto is home-made with love. But the grandkids need not worry-- that's not Papa's motto :)

Oh my, but it has been difficult to get back on track! I wish I could point to tryptophan as the culprit, but I haven't had turkey since Friday. I just felt at loose ends all day, not able to focus in on much of anything. Probably missing the grandbabies. Finally, about 2 pm I managed to deal with last week's Janiac TOW challenge. I completed the triangle and am closing in on 4000 pieces for this quilt. Tomorrow the housekeeper comes--hooray!--and I am on the freeway to visit my sister. It is always so nice to come home to a cleaned house. No excuses after that-- I've got to finish the gifts to get in the mail, and a quiltie for the December swap. I've checked out my pal's work, and I am going to have to stretch to come up with something nearing her skill level. But, I will do my best.

And so we passed a very pleasant Thanksgiving week visiting with family in Las Vegas. We arrived just before the deluge started, and before it was over there was record rainfall for the date. But we were all safe and warm inside, with a feast to savor and family to enjoy. By Friday the weather had cleared, so it was off to Valley of Fire for hiking and enjoying the weather. Lots of photo opportunities, and after all the walking and fresh air, the little ones were very ready for an early bedtime. Grandma and Grandpa, too, I must admit. On Saturday, it was hiking again-- this time in the Red Rock Preserve. Most enjoyable.

We waited until this morning to drive home, and missed all the holiday traffic--whew! Now I'm ready to focus on finishing up a batch of home-made Christmas presents that need to be mailed . So I'll need to put on my elf hat in the morning and get to work :)

And so I've reached 150 blocks. Just in time for a Thanksgiving break. On Tuesday we will be traveling to Las Vegas to our daughter's house for family, food, and football :) It will be such a change not to be in charge of the whole thing. I will, undoubtedly, get a chance to help with the cooking. Tomorrow I need to get serious about packing -- and choosing which handwork to take along in case I get bored with grandchildren and pumpkin pie (as if!!) So I'm signing off until next month, which is only a week away --but not before wishing everyone here in the States a Happy Thanksgiving.

It lets you do some really interesting things with your photos-- bend, stretch and wrap them, and just play around with fantastic, fun effects. And so we were off on another walking adventure. This time to the Arboreturm in Arcadia, California. We were on the trail of giant trumpet flowers and dwarf pomegranates. Found both. Plus, DH got some wonderful bird photographs (http://www.flickr.com/photos/11012018@N03/), and flowers, too. I did capture a butterfly, because it almost landed on top of me.
I suggested that we ought to photograph our own neighborhood-- that might get us out to walk on a regular basis, which would be good for our health.

I have not forgotten about quilting (no chance), and am making progress on DJ. Finished Row J today, so there's a feeling of closure. I estimate I've done somewhere around 3700 pieces. My plan for now through Christmas is to focus on Christmas projects, and put DJ on a back burner--although those weekly challenges are so enticing!

I am getting ready for camellia and azalea season. Talked DH into going to our nearby botanical site, Descanso Gardens, to see if anything is happening yet. Just a few blooms-- with this crazy extended summer, I'm sure the plants are totally confused. There were a few lovely azaleas and camellias, but the hot daytime temperatures pretty much cooked the flowers in no time. I did manage to capture some nice scenes, nevertheless. I am looking forward to December, with hopefully cooler temperatures, and lots of beautiful camellias. A favorite place to visit is the Japanese Tea House. As usual, it was a peaceful setting with many opportunities to capture pretty images.

And here they are, my and my partner's November Swap Til You Drop quilties. The theme was two-color, and it was interesting to see how similar our color schemes turned out. I think that's due to the season-- fall colors are a natural for this time of year. Adding to the fun are the "extras" that come with the quiltie--- crafty or edible goodies sure to please a busy quilter. The top row shows the work of my partner, libbyquilter. It's a lovely little handquilted confection. She also sent tasty tea, swizzles, and chocolate. And three absolutely fantastic handmade postcards (which will never see the US mail, for sure.) The bottom row shows my little quilt ,"Earth's Bounty," which I sent off, along with some fat quarters and a quilt pattern. I really enjoy the quilt swaps.

So here are the results of my foray into cheater land. I decided to make totes from the Dear Jane cheater panel, and I am glad that I did. I cut the panels into individual blocks, then added sashing or squares from my stash. I hand quilted all the DJ blocks, so there is nice texture. They turned out very nice (practice makes perfect, I guess,) and are wide and deep--big enough to hold a bunch of stuff. Inside, there are two pockets for the things that you don't want lost at the bottom of the bag. I've a third bag that is still at the quilting stage. I will finish it this week, for sure.

I just discovered that I cannot hide from ego. Last night, I noticed that my visitor counter was not functioning. How could that be? The knowledge that others stop by here now and again has become satisfying. So, after some trial and error, I am once again keeping track of visits. So much for humility.

Dear Jane continues to work her way into my life. Today, I deviated from my planned holiday projects and went on a DJ "block binge." I finished up 4 blocks in Row J. Being mostly straightforward machine piecing, it was not overly difficult-- except for J5. Those set-in seams were a bugger. Foundation-piecing, however, got me through. My excuse is that my "under finger" needed a little respite from the hand quilting I've been doing lately. Flimsy excuse, but if it works......

I've been very busy creating pretty, practical totes from my Dear Jane cheater panel. I should have been finished a while ago, but I decided to actually hand quilt over the fabric. I am glad that I did, as the results are pretty great. I will have pictures soon.

In the meantime, today I took the time to do this week's Janiacs challenge. I don't want to get behind on the challenges yet-- knowing full well that I will have to take some serious time off to get ready for Christmas. I keep telling myself that it's "not even Thanksgiving yet"--but it seems like only yesterday that it was "not even Halloween yet."

I need to get focused.

And so we are back to life in the slow lane. The political maelstrom has come and gone and we are hopefully the better for it. Time will tell, for sure. I am optimistic.

I had fun in the Studio today. As I had mentioned recently, I bought the new Dear Jane farbics and cheater panel. I had plans for the fat quarters, but what about that panel? I decided to use it in a tote, which I started today. As I was planning, I thought about Jean's Addiction, and fabric for sashing. I decided to use the tote to "audition" my fabric choice, and you can see the result. I like it a lot, and am going to go with it. Since I have all the blocks in rows A through I done, I might start assembling this top.
